Jean-Loup Felicioli and Alain Gagnol’s A Cat in Paris [2011] is a delightful animated romp across Parisian roofs at night as we follow the adventures of a suave cat burglar with a heart of gold, a girl who can’t talk, her cat, her harried policewoman mother, their housekeeper with a perfumed secret, and Paris’ Enemy No. 1 —  but it’s a slight film, if whimsical. Only an hour or so long, it does not exactly move forward the art form nor does it offer anything original in terms of narrative. But it’s quite charming and beautiful and is cleverly drawn — hence its Oscar nomination. The overlooked The Adventures of Tintin, directed by Steven Spielberg, is so much better than this, but then again it is also so much better than the rest of the other nominees.
